Balance Basics and Beyond is a 53-minute DVD designed to promote overall health by teaching exercise strategies to improve one's balance.

As people age, many actions once taken for granted, such as stepping on and off a curb, getting in and out of cars, and even getting dressed can become more difficult. One reason for this, according to certified yoga instructor and holistic healer Carol Dickman, is that injuries, medical conditions such as arthritis, and daily medications take their toll on one’s ability to balance.

A recent study (Johns Hopkins Medicine May, 2009) found that a third of American adults - 69 million people over age 40 - are up to 12 times more likely to suffer a serious fall due to some form of inner-ear dysfunction that unbalances them or makes them dizzy.

Bad balance can cause bone-breaking falls. Good balance, on the other hand, can help one stay active and independent longer and lead a fuller, safer life.

Balance Basics and Beyond DVD

Dickman’s new DVD, Balance Basics and Beyond, is designed for people of all ages and abilities. The 53-minute program, presented by Dickman and two other teachers, is divided into seven sections ranging in length from seven to 17 minutes, including beginners’ classes and one-on-one “boot camp” sessions. Each lesson demonstrates exercises and techniques to restore and build balance and presents ways to adjust degrees of difficulty to accommodate individual needs. Sections include:

  • Maria’s Beginners Group Class (13 minutes)
  • Carol’s Beginners One-on-One Class (Appropriate for the blind and visually impaired; 17 minutes)
  • Petra’s Beginners Group Class (11 minutes)
  • Carol’s Boot Camp One-on-One Class (7 minutes)
  • Jamie & Carol Partner Balancing
  • Carol’s Advanced Balancing
  • Modifications to make workouts more challenging.

Getting Started with Balance Basics and Beyond

Balance Basics and Beyond is ideal for home use or a group setting. Dickman advises getting a full medical exam before starting the program, and to take it slow. Her Introduction sums up her teaching philosophy:

“Approach every day’s worth of practice with a heart full gratitude for what you are able to do, and a mind full of common sense. Remember that when practicing these exercises, if you lose your balance, take a moment, refocus, and start again.”

Balance Basics and Beyond is aimed at seniors, but can be useful to anyone, regardless of age. One segment is especially scripted especially for the blind and visually impaired. The program, filmed in Las Vegas, also includes short motivational sequences and balancing tips.
