Deaf and blind viewers can celebrate Black History Month watching "Barack Obama: The Power of Change" free of charge in two accessible formats.

Elbow Grease Productions has made its feature-length documentary, Barack Obama: The Power of Change, fully accessible (closed captioned and audio described) available free of charge through the Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP) website administered by the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

Barack Obama: The Power of Change, produced by Pearl Jr. and Cecil Holmes, follows Barack Obama on his historic 2008 Presidential campaign, from the grassroots support that powered his journey towards the White House. The film includes some of Obama's most inspirational speeches and features messages from First Lady Michelle Obama and some of the President's most outspoken supporters, including Oprah Winfrey, Caroline Kennedy, Tavis Smiley, and Stevie Wonder.

“As an activist media-driven company offering products and services that assist in a more equal society for all, inclusive to those with disabilities, we are thrilled that Barack Obama's message of hope, change, inspiration, and equality is now accessible to every American,” said co-producer Pearl Jr.

How to Access Barack Obama: The Power of Change Through the DCMP Website

Concurrent with President Obama's message of hope and equality, DCMP is proud to offer this fully accessible, audio described and captioned feature length documentary. Members need only sign into their accounts to view the streaming videos, which will also be available to the general public throughout the month of February.

DCMP membership is available free of charge to teachers, administrators, families and parents of students who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, visually impaired, or deaf-blind.

DCMP is currently offering several additional new titles, many of which focus on politics in the US and abroad, including:

  • Castro or Quit?
  • Edge of Islam
  • No Country for Young Girls
  • Looking for my Gypsy Roots.

Many more films are available on the DCMP web site.

About the U.S. Department of Education

The mission of the U.S. Department of Education is to ensure equal access to education and to promote educational excellence throughout the nation. The U.S. Department funds the DCMP through the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), part of the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS). OSERS supports programs that assist in educating children with special needs, provides for the rehabilitation of youth and adults with disabilities, and supports research to improve the lives of individuals with disabilities.

About the National Association of the Deaf

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) was established in 1880 by deaf leaders who recognized the right of the American deaf community to use sign language, to congregate on issues important to them, and to have its interests represented at the national level. These beliefs remain true to this day, with American Sign Language as a core value. As a nonprofit federation, the mission of the NAD is to preserve, protect and promote the civil, human, and linguistic rights of deaf and hard of hearing individuals in the United States of America.

It is only fitting that a documentary about a President whose candidacy symbolized change and equality be made accessible to those with sensory disabilities.
