The information on Special Meals was provided by the website of Air Canada on January 4, 2007.
Air Canada offers a wide variety of flight classes, and not all of them have meals included in the cost of the flight. You can often purchase food on board if there is no meal included.
The flights where food is included are the international flights (all classes) and Executive Class in North America.
Subject to some restrictions, there are 17 different kinds of Special Meals available.
Here is Air Canada's list of special meals:
For those with food allergies, note:
You should book the special meal when you make your reservation. However, it's not too late if you forget to do it then. Air Canada says you can still phone Air Canada Reservations at least 18 hours before flight departure time, and at least 24 hours for the kosher meal.
Whenever you call an airline to make a change or request, you should have your ticket or confirmation in front of you so that you can give the agent all the information they need to find your booking. Request written (or email) confirmation of the new information.
Do special meals taste better? Are they better quality? The jury is out on that. Some people swear that the vegetarian meals are the best, some people hate airplane food no matter what, and some of us are just happy to have something to eat.
