Stampede for VIPS, Louisville, Kentucky5K Road Race for the Blind Takes Place at Churchill Downs in August
The Stampede showcases elite blind runners and raises awareness of and funds for advocacy and outreach programs run by Visually Impaired Preschool Services of Louisville.
The 7th annual Mark Lynn & Associates Stampede for VIPS (Visually Impaired Preschool Services), a 5K run/walk, will take place on Saturday, August 29, 2009 at Churchill Downs in Louisville. Race time is 7:00 p.m. In recent years, the Stampede has been run under the lights in an out-and-back course over the Second Street Bridge connecting Louisville’s Waterfront Park with Jeffersonville, Ind. A scheduling conflict this year forced race organizers to find a new venue, which led to Churchill Downs, the legendary horseracing track and home of the Kentucky Derby. Stampede for VIPS to be Run at Churchill DownsMost of the race will take place on paved paths within the 147-acre Churchill Downs complex and a short loop of nearby streets. No part of the course touches the dirt racetrack, though family activities (including the Fun Run) will be staged on its infield. The unique venue is generating a great deal of interest in this year’s Stampede, says VIPS development director Heather Benson. “There’s been a great deal of buzz and we anticipate a great turnout due to the race being at Churchill Downs,” said Benson, adding that VIPS is exploring making the track its permanent home. Stampede for VIPS Among Top Road Races for Blind RunnersIn its short history, the Stampede has raised nearly $200,000 for VIPS, and — as one of the few races with a separate category and prize money for blind and visually impaired runners — has raised awareness of the abilities of persons who are blind or visually impaired. The Stampede regularly draws elite blind runners from around the world, including many current and past members of the US Paralympic team. To augment participation of disabled runners, VIPS provides free lodging (at the Kentucky School for the Blind) and $300 in travel expenses to blind and visually impaired participants flying in to Louisville.
