Regular readers may have noticed my typically Canadian preoccupation with the weather. Please bear with me yet again as I want to make sure you understand that Spring is a Big Deal in Calgary, where I live.
We had snow in generous amounts on May 24th this year. Experienced local gardeners wait for that late May snowfall before planting anything more tender than a Christmas tree outside.
The result is that we are now, at June 1st, enjoying the late spring-early summer flowers and even some greenery in this prairie city. It's such a wonderful burst of life that we should really have a parade or something.
It's still too early for most of us to be harvesting anything edible from our own gardens, but we can get healthy fruits and vegetables, local meats, cheeses, renowned pies and all sorts of other goodies at our local farmers' markets.
The Calgary Farmers' Market is open year round. It really begins to shine when the sun comes out. Today I bought some pots of herbs to grow at home and the scents of fresh basil and oregano are making me incredibly hungry!
One thing I was very pleased to see at the Calgary Farmers' Market is that they have reserved a very generous number of parking stalls as handicapped spaces. The smooth floor inside and the wide aisles made it an obvious choice as an accessible travel destination.
While I have been chirping about how great the Farmers' Market is in spring - and it is really fantastic to be reminded that we really will have home-grown vegetables available very soon - I should mention that in winter it's a colourful and cozy place to escape to. Fresh homemade soup and a meat pie, yumm.
