SPOILER BELOW
Sir John Franklin is famous to Canadians as the explorer who died trying to find the Northwest Passage. His body remained in the Canadian Arctic, but there is a monument to him which is mentioned in "Westminster Abbey with Access Tips". I also wrote about my own reaction to seeing that monument for the first time, in a piece called "Sir John Franklin Monument at Westminster Abbey".
Imagine my surprise to find the same man had once been Governor of Tasmania. This was back in 1837, so it wasn't as if Sir John and Lady Franklin could just hop on a plane and get to Australia in a day. In March 1837 they visited Port Arthur penal colony, which is featured in three articles about Port Arthur Historic Site, starting with "Port Arthur, Accessible Tasmania".
